Spitfire Mk V, RAF, as flown by Douglas Bader 1/25
SKU: FBS5

When the Spitfire became operational in 1938, there was nothing to match them for sheer grace of line. Elliptical wings added to their speed and improve handling. The Spitfire Mk V was used mainly by the Royal Air Force and some Allied countries through the World War II up to 1950’s. It was a single-seat fighter aircraft and an icon during its time. The Spitfire was designed by R.J. Mitchell and produced by the subordinates of Vickers-Armstrongs. R.J. Mitchell was the chief engineer of the company. In 1937, he died of cancer. Mitchell still continued to develop the design of the aircraft until before his death. After he died, the development of the aircraft didn’t stop. The position of Chief Engineer was taken over by Joseph Smith, Mitchell’s partner. The Spitfire Mk V was manufactured in great numbers compared to the Spitfires. In 1941, it was the main description of a fighter aircraft. It replaced the Spitfire MK I and Spitfire MK II in its time of service to be part of the British counter attacks against France. In the summer of 1941, it had the advantage over the BF 109 aircraft. But when the FW 190 made its operation in September 1941, the MK V was outshined. In spite of this, the MK V still remained in service until the summer of 1942 and the low level KF MK V was still in used until 1944. ********************************************* Models with SKU numbers ending in "R" are hand crafted of resin material and those ending in "P" are plastic (EXCEPTION: ALL MODELS WITH A HYPHENATED SKU, LIKE AM231-BR, ARE MAHOGANY). All others are hand carved in mahogany. They are then hand painted and detailed by our talented artists. All dimensions given are in inches. This online catalog does not reflect realtime inventory.
